Chinese Herbal Medicine: Benefits, Risks and a Useful Consultation
Jeremy Wong · · Updated

A useful Chinese herbal consultation starts with a specific concern and your full medical context. Benefits and risks depend on the formula, ingredients, dose, quality and the condition being discussed. “Natural” does not mean a product is safer than prescribed medicine.
Bring the information that changes prescribing
- Your main symptoms, their duration and relevant diagnoses.
- All medicines, vitamins, teas and supplements, including product labels.
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, allergies, kidney or liver disease and upcoming surgery.
- Relevant laboratory results and the medical team’s current plan.
Ask what the formula is intended to do
TCM uses pattern differentiation to individualize a prescription. Ask which symptom or function will be followed, what evidence is relevant, when to reassess and what would be a reason to stop. Improvement in one symptom does not establish that an underlying disease has resolved.
Discuss product quality and interactions
Plant products can have pharmacologic effects and interact with medicines. Contamination, adulteration and ingredient identification are additional concerns. Ask about the actual product, dispensing instructions and what to do if a reaction occurs. Do not combine several formulas or change doses without advice.
Keep medical care coordinated
Chinese herbal care should be discussed alongside existing treatment, especially for chronic disease or fertility treatment. Our Chinese herbal medicine service explains the consultation pathway. Contact your preferred office to confirm the practitioner, format, follow-up and fees.
Practical questions before booking
Can I choose a formula from an online symptom list?
A symptom list cannot account for diagnosis, interactions or your health history. An individual assessment is more useful.
Should I stop my prescription medicine?
Do not stop it on your own. Bring the list and coordinate any changes with the prescribing clinician.
